Faceless Creatures

On St. Mark's Place, there are two sculptures I've passed by many times:

Faceless creatures sculptures.

Maybe they're lions, or maybe they're some kind of mythological creatures.

Whatever they are, it looks like years of acid rain have taken its toll on them. You can't even tell what they are any more!

This is the kind of mystery that makes the East Village always so intriguing. One man's environmental degradation is another man's art-for-art's-sake!
