East 6th Street Closed

I was walking across East 6th Street this past Sunday, when I saw this:

As you can see, however, the sign is against the curb, parallel to traffic!

Why was East 6th Street (not actually) closed, you ask? Because a large crane was in the street at the intersection of Avenue A, preparing to lift a transformer:
